273 Compact Conversion for Electric Shift NV263XHD Duramax Trucks Eliminates Transfer Case Oil Pump Rub Fix
The NV273 is a beast with roughly double the GVWR compared to the original Duramax transfer cases. After building 273 Conversion transfer cases to install in GM trucks for a few years we decided it was too much work for the average person to do in their driveway so we needed to build a slightly smaller version, the 273 COMPACT which is a narrower version of the original NV273 making installation in the GM trucks easier and more of a direct bolt-in. We have finally released the 273 COMPACT which gives you a much stronger ALL NEW aluminum case compared to the cheaper magnesium on the original NV263XHD transfer case which of course eliminates the dreaded oil pump rub that plagues all GM 4x4's with magnesium cases. The slightly smaller custom case eliminates the time consuming added steps necessary when converting OEM NV273 cases to fit in Chevrolet and GMC trucks such as the need to extend some wires, move the ABS module back on the frame about 12 inches, and power bleeding the brakes. Many people don't want to mess with those extra steps so the 273 Compact is an easy alternative that is just as strong as the OEM NV273 and an easier fit in the GM trucks.
If you already destroyed your original GM transfer case due to the oil pump rub problem on the the Electric Shift 263XHD, now is the time to upgrade!
The NV273 COMPACT is also the ideal companion to any Solid Axle Swap kit (aka Solid Axle Conversion kit), SAS or SAC for short, since it already has a built in slip yoke eliminator on the front AND rear output shafts!
For folks that have no intention of swapping in a Dana 60 or other solid front axle, there are still very good reasons to swap in the 273 COMPACT transfer case! The original 01-07 Duramax transfer cases have a pretty serious flaw with the "oil pump rub issue" and make the otherwise robust and long lasting drivetrain a joke. We decided that Duramax owners needed an option at least as good as Powerstroke and Cummins owners for their transfer case so we designed this case to allow you to swap in the 273 which not only fixes the inherent weaknesses built into the original Chevrolet and GMC transfer cases that came in your Duramax but totally eliminate them!
IMPORTANT NOTE(s):
- There is a refundable CORE Charge BUT... we will accept your 263XHD as a core!
- The Round Trip Shipping is for the 48 continental USA - This includes shipping the New case to you and for the Core returned to us!
- The 273 COMPACT has fixed front and rear output yokes and will require new drive shafts or drive shaft modification
- You will need to re-use your original shift motor
- Be sure to remove shift motor from your NV263XHD core before you send it back!
- Be CERTAIN that your shift motor (aka encoder motor) is properly functional before you install it on your new transfer case; a bad encoder motor can cause unintended or incomplete shifting and damage the transfer case.
More on the Oil Pump Rub Issue in the Original Duramax NV263XHD
If you have a 2001 to 2007 Classic Chevrolet or GMC 4x4 truck with the Duramax and Allison transmission and the electric shift NV263XHD transfer case, your oil pump WILL end up wearing a hole in the rear case half and the oil will slowly leak out oil until it literally grenades when you least expect it. Often the oil leaks are so tiny you will never even see a drop on your driveway but the oil mist escaping the small hole will still run it dry as you drive!
If you have one of these trucks your transfer case WILL end up wearing a hole in the case and slowly leaking out oil until it destroys itself... usually when it is not convenient for you to be stuck! Remember, many times the oil leaks are so small that only vapor is blown out and you will never even see a drop on your driveway but the oil mist escaping the small hole will still run it dry!
So how can we be sure that is not a matter of IF but WHEN this will happen to YOU? Well, while driving (EVEN in 2 Wheel Drive Mode) the oil pump pushes oil against the rear case and slowly wears on the soft and inexpensive magnesium case material. That wear slowly causes pin-holes to develop in the soft and thin magnesium shell. Over time the oil evaporates out of the transfer case or is spent as a fine vapor. This happens very gradually; so much so that you probably will not realize it until it is too late and you hear your transfer case getting noisy. At that point there will have been damage done to the internal components of your transfer case and it will require a full rebuild. This is what is referred to as the "oil pump rub" problem.
